Final Exam - Digital Media & Virtual Culture
Due in class Wednesday, 12/5/07
Open book/web. If you use any quotes, give the source. I assume most of you will type your answers, but that is not required. Each answer should be about a page long.

Everyone has to answer the first question!

1. What is the future of the arts (particularly the visual arts) in a digital/virtual culture?

Then pick three questions from the following five to answer.

2. Many digital artists create works of art that can best be described as installations. How do the concepts of simulacra and simulation as discussed by Jean Baudrillard relate to the practice of installation art?

3. Discuss the ways in which the Internet has been both a benefit and a detriment to the art world from the mid-nineties to today.

4. We discussed the way that photography prefigured many of the issues raised in digital art (reproduction, technology, manipulation, etc.) Please choose one or two works from your text (Christiane Paul's book) and discuss their relationship to the history of photography.

5. In The Cult of the Amateur Andrew Keen argues that the Internet is "killing our culture." How would Keen's argument relate specifically to the culture of the visual arts?

6. What role will (or should) museums play in connection with digital art?
